Hills and Moorlands

Hills and Moorlands Project

The Hill and Moorlands Project commenced in 2022 and was formally introduced to pupils in January 2024.

It’s core purpose is to inspire young people to develop a lifelong appreciation for physical activity and the natural environment. Through a series of 10–12 guided walks, pupils are encouraged to explore some of the UK’s most scenic landscapes while gaining essential skills in map reading, navigation, and teamwork.

The project provides significant benefits beyond outdoor learning. It supports the development of social skills, resilience, and problem-solving, while also making a notable contribution to pupils’ mental health and well-being. Both staff and visiting Local Authority Advisors have observed the positive impact of the Project, particularly the sense of calm and freedom it offers away from the demands of everyday life.

The success of the Hill and Moorlands Project has also been recognised more widely. An article highlighting the initiative was published in the Professional Mountaineer magazine (Autumn 2025 edition). In addition, the project was awarded the Local School Games “Wolf Award” for going above and beyond in supporting both our pupils and the wider community.

By engaging in this initiative, our pupils not only connect with the outdoors but also cultivate values and skills that will serve them well into adulthood.
